Show Your STRIPES Blog Hop

Welcome, welcome, welcome.  I'm so glad to be participating in yet another friend filled hop organized by Carla from Creatin In The Sticks  Thanks so much Carla.

I have, to say the least, had a very challenging couple of weeks.  On Super Bowl Sunday I had a zoom sew in scheduled with some quilting buddies.   I planned to complete project #1 and start / complete project #2 for this hop.  Instead, very early on I used my rotary cutter to slice into my left pointer finger nail bed instead of my fabric. More than anything else it was a bleeder. A bleeder to the extent that Michael decided I needed to go to the emergency room.     I am going to spare you the photos.

Due to the size of the bandage covering the padding they needed (clotting/glue pad) to use I was not able to comfortably/safely use my sewing machine or rotary cutter.

Well I had wanted to make a table runner for Easter and I really didn't see why I couldn't make it totally without the machine.  I was more than capable to use my scissors, ruler/yard stick, pencil, needle and thread.  After all that's what I used when I started to quilt oh so many years ago.

The seams between the 5 blocks were the most challenging

All my stripes were hand appliqued in place.

I did get my improv striped runner done excluding the quilting by Sunday the 21st excluding most of the quilting.  I did quilt in the ditch between the 5 blocks just so I could get the binding done.
The binding is the backing rolled to the front and hand stitched down eliminating the need to fake another seam by hand.
My kitchen table is rather long and narrow. The runner is 5 foot long and 1 foot wide.

Project #2 was started right after this hop was announced.  I wanted to do something different. I decided I wanted to make a very subtle striped design on a piece of fabric.

I love this stuff.  I purchased it originally from Harbor Freight with a coupon for under $10.  Yeah that's a lot of fabric for that money.   I wanted it for a table cloth for a picnic.  It washed up and ironed beautifully.   After the picnic I cut out the parts with the red wine stains and started to use the left overs for odd things, Pin Cushions, Mug Rugs, Totes and Zip Pouches, etc. I've machine embroidered and stamped on it .

I pick one up every time I notice them on sale or have a coupon.

I took a piece of the cotton canvas and

added a built in machine stitch that gives the fabric a stripped effect.

The problem was I didn't exactly know what I wanted to do with it.  I finally determined that what I wanted was a shopping bag.  Well on Sunday the 21st I plugged my machine back in for the first time in 2 weeks and started the bag using a food store bag as a rough guide.  Mine is way bigger.

Just how much fabric could this hold, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

At the very last minute I remembered to add the stipes to the handles.

Yeah I  know I could have finished the quilting of the table runner but I really wanted to have 2 items in the hop and Easter is still a month away and the fabric was sewn and half cut.

My finger is doing very well. Using the machine was fine since I'm down to a simple band aid but I still can't put much pressure on the finger tip so I'm not using the rotary cutter yet.  Maybe next week.

Lesson learned.  I hate doing stupid stuff when I have no one to blame but myself. Very annoying.

GIVE AWAY

When I went out into the garage to take this picture I found I had several packages of the Cotton Canvas. For my giveaway I will be sending to someone in the USA (sorry but international mail is cost prohibitive) the package in the picture.  Just leave a note in the comment section that you'd like to be included in the draw that will be picked on Monday, March 1.

  2. So sorry about the finger. Love the runner. That is a long table. You have a big kitchen.

  3. Yes, been there, done that. Those things are sharp as a tack! Your table runner turned out great, despite it all and the bag is cute!

  4. So sorry you got hurt. Those rotary cutters are super sharp. The runner and the bag are both cute and useful. Thank you also for the chance to win the drop cloth.

  5. You are so resourceful! Your runner is lovely, and I really love the suggestion of using drop cloth fabric. But, please leave me out of the giveaway. I cut my finger the same way once, but not as deeply. No fun!

  6. Sorry about your finger, glad to hear it is getting better. Your table runner is lovely, but I know I would not have hand stitched it, kudos to you for doing it.

  7. Selina, that table runner for Easter is so perfectly Easterly looking! Wow, all hand stitched! I love the pastel colors and individual striped blocks. I would have figured out how to sew with one hand and an elbow! Ha. I looks wonderful on your table with the bunny and basket center piece.
Then I’m reading about you working with canvas drop cloths and I’m mentally making a note to self ‘buy canvas drop cloth”. Talk about a good sturdy, durable tote. And literally a blank canvas to design on. I’d love to see a drop cloth challenge blog hop. I need more inspiration. Your simply sewn stripes for your tote are a win for your subtle stripe design. You have really got my head gears turning with this. Ha! I’d love to be in your drawing for the canvas drop cloth.

  8. I feel for you. I did the exact same thing with a rotary cutter. I have a scar on my finger to prove it, and it is numb in that area. I bought a cutting glove, but hate wearing it. Good luck.

  9. Great projects! You show us all that "where there's a will, there's a way!" with your use of Old School quilting techniques. Thank you for sharing.

  10. Ouchie! You be careful! I too have a cutting glove! I nicked my left index finger several years ago, right after a friend took a tiny slice off the end of hers! Yikes! I like your long narrow table runner so sweet! Well done! Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the canvas drop cloth! Great shopping bag!

  13. Love that pretty table runner. I hope that you didn't bleed on your fabric! I cut myself with the rotary cutter a couple of years ago, so I feel your pain.

  14. Hi,

  15. Pretty table runner, and great bag! Congratulations on finishing even despite the injury! Hope you are back to baseline soon!

  16. Those rotary cutters are amazing, but I've gotten a few cuts just accidently tapping the blade. Your cut sounds terrible, but I'm glad it's healing up so you can get back to your creating. The table runner turned out so cute and the bag with the stitching is a great idea. I never thought to use drop clothes! Thanks for sharing your stripes and ouchy finger story!

  17. My goodness! I am always fearful of cutting myself or someone else with my rotary blade. These projects are so wonderful though, even with the mishap!

  18. I really enjoyed the canvas drop cloth tip. The stripes really dress it up and make a cut insert on the bag. Prayers for healing quickly.

  22. Ohhh, I just cringe at the thought of cutting your finger, but even more so, at the thought of hand appliqueing that beautiful runner. You truly have the spirit of a quilter...neither wind, rain, snow...or cut finger. LOL!! Great job! I love the idea of using canvas drop cloths too. Plastic is going to be a thing of the past very soon I'm sure, and what a great way to make sturdy bags.

  23. Ouch!! What a story about the cut finger. I have done similar things before, even dislocating my finger one time and still haven't been able to wear my wedding rings since then. Your perseverance is impressive...sewing by hand with the bandage on...and still a sensitive finger. You are inspiring!! Well, what a great idea for the canvas drop cloth. I've actually been thinking about canvas lately and pricing it online. You have the best tip for me. I'm going to go look up prices asap. I love the sturdy bag idea and I need a few for a project at my job. (I'm an art therapist.)

  26. I love that you continued after your injury, thank you! That couldn't have been easy. Your table runner is adorable and will hold a lot of memories after your struggles to stitch it up. Great bag idea. Your really jazzed up that drop cloth and made it so pretty. I would love to try that. Thank your for joining the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop!

  32. It’s good to hear your finger is healing and hopefully soon you can get back to using your rotary cutter as well as the machine soon. We need our tools! What fun you’ll have. The hand sewn runner is sweet and will always be a “Remember when” for you. I love the way you used the Harborfreight cloth to make your nice, roomy striped tote. Very creative.
