The first few pictures capture my previous pin cushion creations. None of them are original ideas. I am a great tutorial follower and pattern user. Not a creative person by nature. This year I have been trying a bit harder to be creative.
Thanks to Kaaren Johnstonhttp://thepaintedquilt.blogspot.com for the stitchery pattern I used for this pin cushion. The pattern fully surrounds the shape. Mine measures in at about 3 x 5 inches. Her pattern and tutorial were spot on.
This one is a modified version of something I saw on the internet. The original had the ribbon sewn into the pin cushion. After several attempts I settled on a real ribbon, I think it turned out a lot nicer than the original.
Amanda Jean over at http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2013/06/mini-9-patch-pin-cushion-tutorial.html posted a tutorial for these adorable little pin cushions.
She did note that they were addicting.
And she was correct. The finished pin cushion is 3 1/2 inches square. The 9 patch is 1 1/2 inch square. Sew easy, sew quick.
So for this hop I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided on making something out of my head.
I needed to start somewhere. Scary isn't it.
After several tries I did come up with a sweet snowman.
Just like people, his vest covers his figure flaws.
I really enjoyed making him his matching hat and scarf
I really hated sticking pins in him.
Pretty sure in the long run he will end up on a shelf with the" pretty" ones.
I have discovered over time that I like a pin cushion with depth. I have several pin cushions in use currently and I stab myself from the bottom on a regular basis when I pick them up.
So for this pin cushion I went for the gusto. It is a 4 inch cube. each side is a different traditional quilt block.
Now it's time to Thank the 2 gals that have made this hop happen, Madame Samm and Kristen, our wonderful and devoted cheerleaders.
Great job ladies.
Also noteworthy are all of the ladies who have taken the time to create pin cushions for your enjoyment. Here is a listing of all of us. Please stop by and visit and if you have the time leave a note, it makes our day.
Thank you for stopping by.

Great job!! (I love to follow patterns too, but then make them my own). Your snowman is adorable and your cube is fantastic! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's fine to follow a tutorial or pattern - but you did challenge yourself just wonderfully. Yes, Mr. Snowman deserves to sit with the 'cute' ones. I love the idea of the cube to use a block pattern on all sides - like a child's play cube - hey, we deserve one of those too!!
ReplyDeleteYour cube is awesome and looks like it would take a mathematician to make it ! You are a creative person for sure..Have a great day !
ReplyDeleteLove all of your pin cushions, but your snowman is my favorite! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove your snowman...I don't think I could stick pins in him either...and his crocheted accesories...too much!!! The CUBE is fantastic...you found your creative calling!!!
ReplyDeleteThe snowman is adorable, too cute to put your pins in, and the cube is awesome!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Jeanneke.
nice cube, sweet snowman, and I love the first one, with the embroidery!
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad about being a pattern follower, there are many of us like you. Anyway, if someone wasn't following the patterns what would be the point for anyone to create them. Your pincushions turned out beautiful and that snowman is adorable.
ReplyDeleteThey're all very creative! Love the Crazy mom ones, but the cute little snowman is the cutest! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing all your lovely pincushions. My favorite is the cute snow man. He is adorable. Thanks for sharing your creativity and being part of this hop
ReplyDeleteThey all so pretty x
ReplyDeleteThey are great - love the snowman. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteGreat work, love your snowman!
ReplyDeleteLove your pin cushions! LOVE the scarecrow one -- I won one of those back in the day and use it every day! :) And I adore your little snowman! Sweet.
ReplyDeleteTheir all lovely but i especially like the halloween strawberry ...super cute !
ReplyDeleteCute collection!!
ReplyDeleteLove them all. Very clever to use a small quilt block on each side of that cushion. And the snowman is so cute - hard to think of stabbing him with pins. Better keep him on the shelf with the pretty ones!
ReplyDeletevery nice pin cushions Selina
ReplyDeletefun! And obviously addictive!
ReplyDeleteYour snowman is wonderful, and I adore the embroidered one!
ReplyDeleteLovely, all of them, but the snowman is absolutely cute!
ReplyDeleteok, seasonal pin cushion and block..love those...strawberry very pretty
ReplyDeleteYour pincushions are wonderful. I often follow a pattern too, but also like to make up my own. Your snowman is just as cute as can be in his dapper little outfit! He deserves a special spot so that he can be admired. Great job on everything!
ReplyDeleteGreat pincushions. We all follow patterns or get ideas after reading one. The snowman is super cute, and the big square one is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your designs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea that snowman but the last ones are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteSooo cute. I love your little snowman! Great job.
ReplyDeleteWhat neat pincushions and I can see why you wouldn't want to stuff yours with shells...better to be safe.
ReplyDeleteLove the cube of quilt blocks! Very creative :)
ReplyDeletemy favorite is the cube - what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteYour pincushions are so cute...I love them all! Your stitching is adorable and that snowman turned out just fine. I'm rethinking using those shells after visualizing what my dogs do to stuffed animals. It would be quite a mess!
ReplyDeleteI love your pincushions... That cube is an awesome idea! I hate getting jabbed by the bottom of the pincushion, too.
ReplyDeleteWell done on your snowman, too. I love that you made his outfit!
Susie
I love your little snowman and I would hate to put pins him too. I do so love snowmen. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteHey, your snowman shows that you ARE very creative, so don't hide yourself and design more of these little cushions!!! But please, wait with the snow, I am not ready now to put on warm clothes, LOL
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your pincushion. Love the big block. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNice assortment of pincushions. I like your snowman with the hat and scarf, so cute.
ReplyDeleteLove your story about the cube pincushion.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, a pincushion snowman! I, like you, know what it is with comfort zones and following tutorials. Very brave to step out of your comfort zone!
ReplyDeleteLoved your pincushions! All of them. And I do think you are very creative. Just look at your snowman and your block pincushion. Adorable.I do have a little tip to share. Place a piece of plastic inside at the bottom of your pincushion. It helps to hold the shape....but more importantly it stops those pins from poking through!
ReplyDeleteCute pin cushions and I agree that a thicker one is better. My skinny ones have the pins coming out of the bottom too. Thanks for sharing yours.
ReplyDeleteI love the little pillow versions and the block was cool!
ReplyDeleteI like your quilt pillow and cube pincushions.
ReplyDeletelove all your beautiful pincushions!!
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are all so pretty! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great assortment of pin cushions. You have done a superb job with them.
ReplyDeleteI like your snowman. He has character. :) I agree with you on pincushions with depth. I too don't like being poked from the bottom. Your cube is perfect.
ReplyDeleteAdorable pincushions... those tiny 9 patches caught my eye! Thanks for including the link.
ReplyDeleteSo cute - all of them, but those little 9-patches are my favorites. :0)
ReplyDeleteYour pincushions are great , the nine patch also caught my eye , terrific job , thanks for sharing .
ReplyDeleteCute pincushions...love your snowman!!! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteSweet pincushions! Love the hand emb one:)
ReplyDeleteYour snowman pincushion is too precious...I don't think I could stick him either!
ReplyDeleteThe cube is a perfect solution for keeping the ends safely tucked away!
Lovely little pin cushions. My favorite is the snowman. Sew cute.
ReplyDeleteYour pincushions are all very nice..I like the Snowman's hat and scarf, very festive..
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard to stop at just one.

ReplyDeleteI am in love with that snow guy's hat!!
ReplyDeleteVery cute pin cushions, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour snowman came out cute! Thanks for the tutorial links.
ReplyDeleteSo many pretties!! Love, love, love them all!
ReplyDeleteYep I could't stick pins in that cute snowman either! I can see how the tiny ones would be addictive. Your 4 inch cube with different quilt blocks is my favorite. Great idea.

Wonderful pincushions! Just looking at the snowman makes me want to sing, Walking in a Winter Wonderland!!!
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful! Now the picture of a dog having a field day with a pincushion is stuck in my mind! :-)

Your little snowman is super cute. I agree with pincushions with depth. The only thing worse than having pins fall to the floor is getting stabbed by one. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove your cute snowman! Too cute! Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteVery nice pin cushions. I like both the snow man and the cube equally. Thank you for sharing your creative talents. Great ideas.
ReplyDeleteHa! I, too, hate sticking pins into a cushion that looks anything like a person. Maybe it's that voodoo thing!! I loved the small strawberry shaped cushion with the beautiful hand stitching - just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI like your cube - I too am a fan of a big solid pincushion. You would love the way the crushed walnut shells feel in the pincushion - and I bet they would vacuum up pretty easily if the dog got it. They are tiny, like sand.
ReplyDeleteI love your snowman too - but he reminds me of the Small Potatoes that are on the Disney channel! Emmy loves them, dances along when they sing!
Loved all your projects! Very nice work!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about using rice in the next pin cushion I make.
ReplyDeleteFun and fabulous pincushions. One can never have too many. Great hop...
ReplyDeleteNice work!
ReplyDeleteYou were busy! Lots of cute ones.
ReplyDeleteAll so adorable, I can sure see why you didn't want to put pins in your Santa. He is so cute.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful! I want to try a cube one now ... mm the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteI adore your pin cushions. I completely agree with you about the virtues of having a "thick" pin cushion. I get a tad miffed when I pick up a pin cushion and get attacked by the pins. It sort of puts a damper of wanting to sew. I love that you made a great useful size. I love all you pin cushions. They are inviting. I started to say I especially like the embroidered one - I like all of them, it's just a little more unique to me. I hope you are feeling better after your surgery and you are amazing to participate and inspire me. I saw the blocks you made to help make quilts for cancer patients - I'm a breast cancer survivor. Thanks for doing that - some one will be richly blessed - thanks to your efforts.
ReplyDeleteThat cube is great but that snowman takes the cake! Not creative my eye! You did an awesome job making up that snowman!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your lovely pincushions! My favourite is the snowman!
ReplyDeleteGreat pincushions. I especially like the large cube--it can hold, oh so many pins. Great work!
ReplyDeleteGreat pincushions. I especially like the large cube--it can hold, oh so many pins. Great work!
ReplyDeleteLove the snowman he looks so cute. Susie x
ReplyDeleteLove the snowman, i wouldn't put pins in him either.
ReplyDeleteHow fun all all these!
ReplyDeleteNice, nice!
ReplyDeleteAll your pincushions are wonderful but that snowman is adorable. I think I would feel as so I was poking a voodoo doll putting a pin in him. I love your "go for the gusto" one made from quilt blocks though! Now that is a PIN cushion!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt block square
ReplyDeleteHi!!! Wow!!! I love your snowman!!! Too cute!!! Your little squares are adorable too!!!!
