Pin It - Another Creative Blog Hop

The first few pictures capture my previous pin cushion creations.  None of them are original ideas. I am a great tutorial follower and pattern user. Not a creative person by nature. This year I have been trying a bit harder to be creative.

Thanks to Kaaren Johnstonhttp://thepaintedquilt.blogspot.com for the stitchery pattern I used for this pin cushion.   The pattern fully surrounds the shape.  Mine measures in at about 3 x 5 inches. Her pattern and tutorial were spot on.

This one is a modified version of something I saw on the internet. The original had the ribbon sewn into the pin cushion.  After several attempts I settled on a real ribbon, I think it turned out a lot nicer than the original.

Amanda Jean over at   http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2013/06/mini-9-patch-pin-cushion-tutorial.html posted  a tutorial for these adorable little pin cushions.

She did note that they were addicting.

And she was correct.  The finished pin cushion is 3 1/2 inches square.  The 9 patch is 1 1/2 inch square.  Sew easy, sew quick.

So for this hop I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided on making something out of my head.

I needed to start somewhere.  Scary isn't it.

After several tries I did come up with a sweet snowman.
Just like people, his vest covers his figure flaws.

I really enjoyed making him his matching hat and scarf

I really hated sticking pins in him.

Pretty sure in the long run he will end up on a shelf with the" pretty" ones.

I have discovered over time that I like a pin cushion with depth.  I have several pin cushions in use currently and I stab myself from the bottom on a regular basis when I pick them up.

So for this pin cushion I went for the gusto.  It is a 4 inch cube. each side is a different traditional quilt block.
I'm really gonna love sticking pins in her.

I stuff my pin cushions with fiber fill.  I thought of using the crushed pecans but I've seen Tink attack a stuffed toy and I really don't want to think how far flung crushed pecans can go in a doggie mishap.

Now it's time to Thank the 2 gals that have made this hop happen, Madame Samm and Kristen, our wonderful and devoted cheerleaders.
Great job ladies.

Also noteworthy are all of the ladies who have taken the time to create pin cushions for your enjoyment.  Here is a listing of all of us. Please stop by and visit and if you have the time leave a note, it makes our day.

Thank you for stopping by.

  3. Great job!! (I love to follow patterns too, but then make them my own). Your snowman is adorable and your cube is fantastic! :)

  4. It's fine to follow a tutorial or pattern - but you did challenge yourself just wonderfully. Yes, Mr. Snowman deserves to sit with the 'cute' ones. I love the idea of the cube to use a block pattern on all sides - like a child's play cube - hey, we deserve one of those too!!

  10. Don't feel bad about being a pattern follower, there are many of us like you. Anyway, if someone wasn't following the patterns what would be the point for anyone to create them. Your pincushions turned out beautiful and that snowman is adorable.

  37. Loved your pincushions! All of them. And I do think you are very creative. Just look at your snowman and your block pincushion. Adorable.I do have a little tip to share. Place a piece of plastic inside at the bottom of your pincushion. It helps to hold the shape....but more importantly it stops those pins from poking through!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cute pin cushions and I agree that a thicker one is better. My skinny ones have the pins coming out of the bottom too. Thanks for sharing yours.

  67. Your little snowman is super cute. I agree with pincushions with depth. The only thing worse than having pins fall to the floor is getting stabbed by one. Thanks for sharing.

  69. Very nice pin cushions. I like both the snow man and the cube equally. Thank you for sharing your creative talents. Great ideas.

  70. Ha! I, too, hate sticking pins into a cushion that looks anything like a person. Maybe it's that voodoo thing!! I loved the small strawberry shaped cushion with the beautiful hand stitching - just gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I like your cube - I too am a fan of a big solid pincushion. You would love the way the crushed walnut shells feel in the pincushion - and I bet they would vacuum up pretty easily if the dog got it. They are tiny, like sand.

I love your snowman too - but he reminds me of the Small Potatoes that are on the Disney channel! Emmy loves them, dances along when they sing!

  72. Loved all your projects! Very nice work!

    ReplyDelete
  77. They are beautiful! I want to try a cube one now ... mm the possibilities!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I adore your pin cushions. I completely agree with you about the virtues of having a "thick" pin cushion. I get a tad miffed when I pick up a pin cushion and get attacked by the pins. It sort of puts a damper of wanting to sew. I love that you made a great useful size. I love all you pin cushions. They are inviting. I started to say I especially like the embroidered one - I like all of them, it's just a little more unique to me. I hope you are feeling better after your surgery and you are amazing to participate and inspire me. I saw the blocks you made to help make quilts for cancer patients - I'm a breast cancer survivor. Thanks for doing that - some one will be richly blessed - thanks to your efforts.

  85. All your pincushions are wonderful but that snowman is adorable. I think I would feel as so I was poking a voodoo doll putting a pin in him. I love your "go for the gusto" one made from quilt blocks though! Now that is a PIN cushion!
